Speed is the decisive factor, as timber frame proves the perfect build solution for family dream home
Timber Innovations client Dave Powell became a self-builder by default – but is delighted he took the decision, and now putting the finishing touches to his lovely new timber frame home near Stafford he shares with his family.
“To be honest, I wasn’t looking to do a self-build initially,” said Dave. “We looked at a number of properties, nothing top of the range, just something I could improve to our own desires, and when we found somewhere, we couldn’t get the planning permission for the changes we wanted to make, so we demolished it, and started from scratch.

Jason’s vision for his oak-themed holiday home self-build is turned into reality
When the Spencer family acquired a plot of land in Happisburgh, on the Norfolk coast, they knew it would make for an ideal holiday home location.
But Jason Spencer was facing a dilemma. The cottage that stood on the plot was in need of urgent repair, and he spent many hours deciding on whether to do a refurbishment, or simply just knock the building down and start again.
Eventually he chose the latter option, and later this year his self-build project will be finished. Jason and his family are already looking forward to enjoying hours of fun there. And they will be doing it in a pristine, new holiday home, which has been designed and built with a nod of respect to the surrounding barns and cottages, built back in the 19th century.
“You wouldn’t think of it as a new build, even though it is,” said Jason, an electrical engineer, who lives in St Albans. “It’s going to look fantastic, and for that I have Timber Innovations to thank in a big way: they nailed it exactly as I wanted it, and I’m thrilled.”
